Highly anticipated Star Wars Battlefront 2 was revealed over the weekend during a panel at Star Wars: Celebration where much more information was revealed that what the trailer showed us, this is what we know so far.
The story of Battlefront 2 will place you in the boots of an elite stormtrooper, Iden Versio, who is part of Inferno Squadron. The protagonist, alongside the rest of Inferno Squadron, witnesses the destruction of the Death Star during the battle on the forest moon of Endor and they set out for vengeance. Just like in the campaign for the original Battlefront 2 this one will also place the player in the boots of a "bad guy" who feels the need to avenge the Emperor and all of those who died on the Death Star and to ultimately crush the rebellion. Characters like Luke Skywalker and Kylo Ren will also show up in the story mode, though how big a part they will play has not yet been revealed. The story for Battlefront 2 is being developed with the help of Lucasfilms and it will all be a part of the new cannon. Even though various EA and DICE hot shots keep on saying that this will be a Star Wars story we have not seen before it still feels like we have with 501st Journal, just to mention one example.
“EA has assembled an incredible set of developers to create a Star Wars gaming experience unlike anything fans have ever experienced,” said Douglas Reilly, Senior Director, Digital & Franchise Management. “Star Wars Battlefront II will offer everything players loved about the last installment, and adds new modes that we know the fans want, including an entirely new story developed in partnership with Lucasfilm.”
“We wanted to create a campaign that told a story we haven’t seen before in Star Wars,” says Mark Thompson, Game Director at Motive Studios. “It was important for us to tell a new authentic story, one that gives players a brand-new perspective. By putting players in the boots of an elite member of the Imperial forces, we can show them what the battle was like from the other side.”
As was to be expected, a book set four years before the events in Battlefront 2 will be released called "Star Wars Battlefront 2: Inferno Squad" written by Christina Golden, the book will go in a bit deeper on the characters, their background, and who they are and much more. What we know about our protagonist so far is that she's called Iden Versio and has an Imperial background with her father being an admiral who helped conquer their homeworld and make it an obedient Imperial planet. The book going in deeper on the characters in Battlefront 2 is set for release July 25, 2017.
The multiplayer in Battlefront 2 is getting bigger as well, this time around DICE will allow players to fight across all eras of cannon Star Wars which means prequels, the original trilogy, and whatever we call the new set of films (sorry, no old republic). The multiplayer modes will feature a class system similar to Battlefield, and the original Battlefront games, and since players will battle across all eras they will get to fight as a droid in one battle and as a First Order stormtrooper in the next with the class system adapting itself to the era they are fighting in. Of course that also means that there will be maps from all eras as well. The heroes will be customizable as well, meaning you can outfit your Yoda and Darth Maul as you see fit.
Antother big complaint about the last Battlefront game, besides there not being a camping, was the lack of space battles, which played a vital part in many of the movies. They were only added via DLC so the base game of Battlefront was completely ground based, which felt weird considering it's called "Star" Wars and not "land" wars or similar. This time around they will play a big part of multiplayer and hopefully they will be as fun as they were in the old Battlefront games where players fought over shield generators to be able to board and destroy the enemy ship from within. There will also be ships from different eras as well and each era of ships will have unique features.
Star Wars Battlefront 2 is set for release on November 17, 2017, on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. PlayStation 4 also seems to have some exclusivity deal, but what exactly that is remains to be revealed. You can also see the cover for the regular and the deluxe edition down bellow.
