It has now been made official, James Gunn will be returning to both write and direct the third and concluding film of this iteration of Guardians of the Galaxy.
James Gunn was uncertain whether or not he would be the one writing and directing the concluding Guardians of the Galaxy film and for a long time it seemed like he would not be involved at all, that was until he posted a rather lengthy Facebook post (which you can read in its entirety bellow) explaining why it took him so long to decided. We all know how many trilogies end, often times fans pretend like the last movie never happened and the Matrix films might be the best example of how the last movie easily becomes the worst. James Gunn did not want his Guardians of the Galaxy films to turn into such a trilogy where fans and even the director does their best to just forget about one of the films, he said that he had always made his career choices based on his passion and love for the story and the characters, he was not about to change that.
"Before I was able to honestly answer this, I needed to know it was, in my heart, what I truly felt called to do. There is a history in Hollywood of haphazard endings to trilogies, and I didn’t want to become a part of that dishonorable tradition of pretending the third one doesn’t exist. I couldn’t do it for the money, and I couldn’t do it because it was what other people wanted me to do. I needed to do it because it was what I needed to do. I have never made choices in my career based on anything other than passion and love for the stories and characters, and I didn’t want to start now."
James Gunn also revealed that Guardians of the Galaxy 3 will take place after Avengers Infinity War. He said that Guardians of the Galaxy 3 will be the last story of this iteration of the Guardians and will help catapult both old and new Marvel characters into the next ten-year story arc and that he would work close with Marvel's Kevin Finge to help design the where these stories go. Seems like Gunn is reaffirming his already important possition in the Marvel Cosmic Universe.
"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will happen after all that. It will conclude the story of this iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy and help catapult both old and new Marvel characters into the next ten years and beyond. I will be working side-by-side with Kevin Feige and the gang to help design where these stories go, and make sure the future of the Marvel Cosmic Universe is as special and authentic and magical as what we have created so far."
But that is all in the future, the release of Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 is closing in on us with its May 5 release date. It is, of course, written and directed by James Gunn and will star Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, and Kurt Russell.
